“LIFE is the EU’s financial instrument supporting environmental and nature conservation projects throughout the EU”
The LIFE programme is the EU’s funding instrument for the environment and climate action. The general objective of LIFE is to contribute to the implementation, updating and development of EU environmental and climate policy and legislation by co-financing projects with European added value.
LIFE began in 1992 and to date there have been four complete phases of the programme:
LIFE I: 1992 – 1995
LIFE II: 1996 – 1999
LIFE III: 2000 – 2006
LIFE+: 2007 – 2013
LIFE NECOVERY belongs to LIFE+ 2007 -207 programme. With a budget of €2.143 billion. LIFE+ is a limited but focused funding instrument providing specific support to the implementation, updating and development of EU environmental policy and legislation.
Since LIFE started has co-financed some 3,954 projects across EU, contributing approximately €3.1 billion to the protection of the environment.
The LIFE support is comprised of three components:
• LIFE+ Nature & Biodiversity
• LIFE+ Environment Policy & Governance
• LIFE+ Information & Communication
Within the LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance, a specific topic is dedicated to water-related projects. This thematic section aims at supporting the implementation of EU water policy by addressing a wide range of issues, such as urban water management, industrial wastewater treatment, river basin monitoring and improving groundwater quality.The NECOVERY project belongs to the LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance category.
